Vakantie
Vroeger zat je na de vakantie in spanning op het resultaat van je foto’s te wachten. Dat duurde minstens een week. Er was altijd een risico dat ht resultaat onscherp, flets was of dat de foto’s helemaal mislukt waren. Ik hoorde eens van iemand die in die analoge tijd een lange reis door Scandinavië had gemaakt, tientallen rolletjes had volgeschoten om vervolgens bij het afhalen van de ontwikkelde foto’s in de fotowinkel te horen kreeg dat alle beelden zwart waren. Een drama.Wat restte waren de herinneringen. Maar herinneringenvervagen sneller zonder materiële getuigenis.
Huis van de Fotografie
Vroeger, dat was de jaren 80 van de vorige eeuw. In de jaren negentig deed de digitale fotografie haar intrede, waarmee een revolutionaire verandering van de beeldcultuur werd ingeluid. Een van de eerste instellingendie daarmee experimenteerde in haar presentaties was de Noorderlicht, Huis van de , waar ik sinds enige tijd met veel plezier werk. Noorderlicht organiseert festivals, maakt tentoonstellingen en geeft boeken uit. Deze netwerkorganisatie componeert geëngageerde verhalen en zoekt daar professionele fotografen bij uit een wereldwijdnetwerk dat zij in de 25 jaar van haar bestaan zorgvuldig heeft opgebouwd.
Beelden
Inmiddels is de positie van de fotografie verder veranderd. Iedereen maakt foto’s en stuurt ze met groot enthousiasme ongebreideld de wereld in. Het beeld lijkt het allerbelangrijkste communicatiemiddel van de mens geworden. Dat heeft een mooie kant, omdat beelden vaak veel meer zeggen dan tekst alleen. Maar er is een keerzijde die terecht tot zorg stemt. Het steeds meer en steeds professioneler gemanipuleerde beeld zorgt voor een valse voorstelling van zaken. Daar komt nog bij dat het vooral de professionaliteit van de tools betreft. Elke amateur kan zeer professionele ogend materiaal maken dat alleen door de echte kenner is de onderscheiden. En zelfs door die niet meer. Er komen steeds meer beelden die de plek innemen van de werkelijkheid van waaruit ze zijn voortgekomen.
Met andere woorden: niets hoeft meer te zijn wat het lijkt.Dat gaat de beeldcommunicatie meer en meer beïnvloeden, waardoorhet voor de ontvanger lastig zo niet onmogelijk wordt om te kunnen interpreteren wat hij ziet.
Nonsens
Deze gemanipuleerde beelden ondersteunen de groeiende stroom aan nonsens die als waarheid de wereld in wordt geslingerd. Het nepnieuws, in korte tijd een gevleugeld woord geworden, krijgt hiermee een visuele evenknie. Dat ondermijnt het vertrouwen in elkaar in een wereld waarin voornamelijk met beelden wordt gecommuniceerd.
Deze ontwikkeling maakt een fundamentele plek voor de kunsten in het algemeen en de fotografie in het bijzonder nodig. Om het beeld te duiden, om mensen te helpen in de interpretatie ervan en niet in de laatste plaats het gevoel voor ethiek én esthetiek te blijven voeden.

It is not wat it seems to be
Holidays
Long, long time ago, after spending the holidays, you had to wait for the results of your pictures at least a week. There was always a risk of having blurred pictures or no pictures at all in the end. I heard this sad story the other day of someone who had made a long journey through Scandinavia in this analogue time. He had dozens of rolls with thousands of yet unrevealed pictures taken to the photoshop for developing. Finally he bursted into tears hearing the guy from the photoshop say that all images were black and blue. A real drama, I can tell you.
Noorderlicht, House of Photography
In the nineties of the 20th century, digital photography began to introduce a revolutionary change of image culture. One of the first institutions that experimented with this in public exhibitionswas the Noorderlicht, House of Photography for which I am working with pleasure at the moment. institution organizes festivals, exhibitions and publishes books. It is a network organization which composes engaged stories and seeks professional photographers for imagining these. Manipulation
In the meantime, the position of photography has changed further. Everybody takes pictures and sends them with enthusiasm to the world. The image seems to be the most important means of human #communication. That has a nice side, because images often say much more than text alone. But the other side of the coin justifies care. The increasingly and professionally manipulated image causes a false representation of things. In addition, it is especially the professionalism of the tools which causes this risks. Each amateur can make very professional looking material that can only be distinguished by the true connoisseur. And even that is not sure. There are more and more images that take the place of reality from which they originated.
In other words, nothing has to be what it seems. This will affect the #image #communication more and more, making it difficult for the recipient to be able to interpret what he sees.
Nonsense
These manipulated images support the growing stream of nonsense in disguise we meet everyday. This gives this fake news, these alternative facts as you wish, a boost in a short time. There isa visual match with fake news, so to say. That undermines trust in a world where the image is the leading tool for communication.
This development asks for a fundamental place for the arts in general and the photography in particular. To identify the image, to help people in their interpretation and to feed the sense of #ethics and #aesthetics.
